Luxury Villas In Samos

The Greek island of Samos expands across 475 sq.km and lies on the north-eastern edge of the Aegean sea, some 175 nautical miles from Athens. Samos has a population of some 35,000 inhabitants and is the largest of the north-eastern Aegean islands, with a small yet busy airport with daily domestic flights and numerous seasonal international connections. There are also three main ports that link the island by boat to the mainland, other islands and even Turkey.

The characteristic aspects of Samos is its beauty and variety of the nature, it boasts 160 kilometres of coastline including pure-white sandy beaches, small fishing harbours, as well as many picturesque inland villages dotting the island’s two striking mountain ranges and linked by forest roads offering breathtaking views of the Aegean through the pine forests. On the Southern side of the island, the long sandy beaches are protected from the northerly winds. On the northern side of the island, the beaches are shorter more remote, some of them sandy, some pebbled, all incredibly beautiful.  Further inland, impressive forests climb the mountainous landscape ideal for hikes during which you can visit monasteries and remote villages which live off farming the rich land of Samos.

The history of Samos is long and proud and lives on through archaeological sites, museums, historical monuments and most importantly its day to day traditions.  In antiquity, Samos was the home of the mathematician Pythagoras, the philosopher Epicure, the fabulist Aesop, and the astronomer Aristarchus.  Samian Hera, queen of Mount Olympus and wife of Zeus, was born here, and as such, grand temples were erected to worship her. The most impressive, the Heraion, is a Unesco World Heritage Site and a popular attraction for visitors from around the world. In Pythagorion, near the ancient theatre—used today for summer cultural festivals—and the Polycrates Wall (second half 6th century B.C.) is the famous Eupalinos tunnel-aqueduct, a technical marvel dating to the 6th century B.C., which used to supply the town with fresh water from the other side of the mountain.

In Ottoman times, Samos retained a form of independence within the empire, allowing for trade in wine, tobacco and leather products to flourish. The island’s capital, Samos, is built amphitheatrically on the slopes around the natural harbor of Vathy, while the island’s wealth is visible in the architecture and style of the buildings.  In the port of Karlovassi, the old industrial and trade capital of the island, many of the old tanneries which flourished in the 19th and early 20th century still stand. Karlovassi is a lively port with a number of traditional Greek tavernas and fish restaurants line the harbour, as well as shops, banks, and a medical centre.  Karlovassi nightlife is vibrant, especially in the summer season. The beach life is a big part of the local lifestyle, and can be best sampled at Potami beach, any time of the day.

Mountain villages like Manolates and Vourliotes are worth a visit for their the ambience, locals and scenery. In Mytilinioi, an open air cinema operates in the summer, or further a field the island of Patmos with its famous Cave of the Apocalypse and the monastery, is a short boat ride away, as is the ancient city of Ephesus and Kusadasi open air market, in Turkey, all of which add to the variety of activities available to the visitor of Samos.
