Bermuda is often mistaken for a Caribbean island, but it actually closer to USA then the Caribbean. It is one of the world’s wealthiest places. It was named after the Spaniard Juan de Bermudez, who found the island in 1511, on his way to The Americas in his search for gold. The island holds lots of history and ship wrecks – William Shakespeare was believed to be inspired to write the play “The Tempest”
It is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, 1,000 miles away from any Caribbean island, but only 650 miles away from the coast of North Carolina. The island was formed by volcanic activity, millions of years ago it has no neighbouring islands and it stands 15,000 feet from the sea-bed and it has the most beautiful reefs surrounding it. The island is very clean and tidy, with everything in it’s place, the people are very friendly, the local dress in is Bermuda shorts and matching long knee-length socks, even for the policemen. Considered a safe island – exceptionally low crime rate.
The capital is Hamilton, where all the buildings are painted in pastel colours with white roofs. This is characteristic of the all the buildings on the island. It is an international Finance centre, with many insurance companies having a base there. There are quite a few shops and boutiques, restaurants and bars to choose from. Hamilton is also a cruise port, but there is a restriction to only allow 2 ships in the harbour at any one time. The other ships have to wait their turn in Georgetown. When entering the city of Hamilton you will see “Johnny Barnes” – a local chap who has been greeting and smiling at everyone on their to the sity for over 20 years. There is also a statue of him with his open –armed welcome. The Language is English.
The Climate – the island has a very different climate to the Caribbean. They have two seasons – Spring from October to April and Summer – April to October. This sub-tropical climate ranges between 65 – 85 F all year round – no rainy season. Summer is the main season for great weather, but it is a great twin-centre holiday option with Boston or New York.
The Currency is the Bermuda Dollar which works out about the same as value as the US$.
The Airport is Bermuda International Airport., located close to St George’s in the Northern area of the island.
Beaches – Bermuda well known for it’s beautiful pink sand beaches, which have been created by the unique pink animal called “Foraminifera “ which calcifies on the reefs that surround the island, there are approx 100 of them measuring up to around 26 miles of beach. The waters are more choppy on the south shore, ideal for body boarding on the surf.
South Shore Beaches – West Whale Bay – Southampton Parish The smallest beach of all and the most secluded – the beach can disappear with the tide though ! Horse-shoe Bay – Southampton Parish One of the island’s best known and most popular, with great beach facilities. Jobson’s Cove – Southampton Parish A small beach, and very private. Elbow Beach – Paget Beautiful stretch of beach, very easy accessed for those people staying the center of Bermuda. There is a great Café Lido, which offers a variety of snacks and refreshments. North Shore Beaches – Shelley Bay – Hamilton Parish This beach is ideal for children and non-swimmers, the water is very calm. It has plenty of facilities including a playground and nature trail. Tobacco Bay, St George’s Parish Best snorkelling beach, with an off shore coral cove where you can see some of the beautiful aquatic life. Snorkel equipment can be hired from the beach house.
