Portugal is one the smallest countries in Europe, and yet it offers a tremendous variety of geographical wonders and ways of life, from the sophisticated cities to the rural areas and the beachfront resorts.

The Northern and Central regions are densely populated and characterised by rivers, valleys, forest and mountains. The Northern Douro valley is the home of the famous Portuguese Port. Lisbon Portugal's capital, on the North West coast is a favourite, because it has a blend of architectural styles, history, markets, colourful buildings amongst cobbled streets and modern shopping malls.

The climate varies between the North and the Algarve, in the North the cooler wetter season is from November to March, and in the mountains it is quite common to have a snowfall. The Algarve is quite a contrast to the North, it has long stretches of beautiful beaches, sea - side resorts sheltered by the red sandstone cliffs, fabulous marinas and picturesque towns. Beaches along this southern coast range from the extensive stretches of sea - washed sands to the small rocky inlets and hidden coves. Dining out in Portugal is great vale for money, not surprisingly the sea is one of the main sources of cuisine, in fact they have a different recipe for cod, for every day of the year! In the North the food is delicious as in the South, but more wholesome and traditional, and the portions are very generous. Along the Algarve, the choices are endless with the variety of international cuisine in restaurant lined marinas, sophisticated hotel restaurants or beachfront bars and cafes.

Throughout the country the festivals(festas) and fairs(ferias) are plentiful, with the man event being the carnival which takes place 6 weeks before Easter. Portugal is a golfers paradise, with over 50 courses in total, and 19 spectacular courses overlooking the sea are in the Algarve.
